Commissioners not at fault
Letter to teh editor: It has been how the Lancaster Newspapers Inc. has abandoned its proper journalistic perspective due to its 44 percent sponsorship interest in the convention center/hotel project. Editor's note: Since Jan.1, the Intelligencer Journal has published 12 stories about the commissioners' commitment to farmland preservation, smart growth initiatives, urban area grants and the creation of a "natural areas inventory.''

You better watch out: There's something in your stocking
Candy canes for the principals in Penn Square Partners who stepped up years ago at the request of the Downtown Investment District to keep the Watt & Shand site from turning into a parking garage. Many lumps of coal (dark begets dark) to Mr. Robert Edwin Field and other hotel/convention center opponents who constantly carp about what they believe to be a Lancaster Newspapers editorial bias toward the Penn Square project. They refuse to acknowledge that without their access to the newspapers' editorial pages, their voices would not be heard. They get much more than their share of letters published. Case in point: Mr. Field's unhelpful comments are published today as they were the past two Sundays.

November 2006

County chief has hefty war chest
Since taking office in 2004, Shellenberger has raised $18,043.33. More than $16,000 of that came during 2005, when the three-member board -- Shellenberger is the chairman -- became embroiled in disputes over the hotel/convention center and the sale of Conestoga View nursing home. In the first six months of this year, he received only one contribution, worth $1,000. Information about the rest of 2006 is not yet available.

Center process not secretive or flawed
David Pidgeon's article, "Pa. Senate OKs bill to let city pay taxes on hotel" (Intell, May 2), inaccurately portrayed the Department of Community & Economic Development's release of Act 23 grants to the Redevelopment Authority of the City of Lancaster. The headline implied and several avowed project opponents quoted in the piece said the process was "mishandled," done in "the quiet of the back door" and neither elected officials nor the public was informed of the release of these funds.

Old news offers a history lesson
It was with frustration that I read the article from the Intell's archives from April 11, 1986 "City Selects Study Unit For Convention Center" (Intell, April 3) indicating that 20 years ago, the City of Lancaster announced a steering committee to determine if the city could support a convention center. Little did they know that 20 years later, some in our community would try to block just such a proposal because they haven't had time to determine if it is feasible.

Time to help the city
The cost versus the benefit of convention center and hotel project is really a better deal for Lancaster County than that of the farm preservation program. According to the worst-case scenario study of the convention center that came out recently, it will cost each county resident, at most, $2.46 a year if the project fails.
